THE PASS (BYRON BAY, N.S.W.) JIGSAW PUZZLE
ABOUT THE PASS
“The Pass” is a beautiful area at one end of Byron bay’s Main Beach. It is sacred. One of the biggest Aboriginal middens ever found is directly behind the beach where you see the trees. “Passover depicts the world view of Byron Bay as seen through the eyes of the Aborigine. A probable reality where there is time for children, time to fish and time to be in the natural world. Feeling it and living it. Elders told the artist that the totemic creature for the men in Byron Bay is the sea eagle so the men fly with the eagles in the painting. For the women it is the dolphin and thus the women mimic the dolphin’s oceanic flight. On the far end of the beach a new mother and father appear. they have birthed their child on “Little Wategos” beach, a sacred women’s place where children were born. elders also spoke of the Rainbow Serpents’ daily renewal and how Byron is as important as Uluru spiritually because it is where the sun first touches Australia in the morning and is thus renewed; being the most easterly point. So rainbow colour infiltrates the whole painting to show that Rainbow is alive within all elements.
PASSOVER – A POEM
Step into my shoes
For I’ve stepped in yours
And yet my feet belong to the ground
I’ve looked through your eyes
It made me sad
So follow me into my world
Without shoes you feel the pulse of this land
And it beats to the rhythm of heart
You touch your Self
And remember so much
Listen Now Feel a different wealth
Embrace your children
Give them your time
For their joy will tickle the land
Laugh with them and it will be
Heard by the stars and
In the sound of the sand
Look around you
Feel your rhythm
If it’s lost then slow down and be free
Go back to a time when your heart felt joy
Be honest If you want, come with me
I know how to share
I know we are One
I know because my ancestors whisper
They sing through the waves
They speak on the wind and through
Rock paintings they silently disappear
Imagine this life
Grasp it’s message with all of your focus
Feel it’s powerful wind lash
On the turn of your tide
Let chaos find order
And surrender on shores where waves crash
