Campbell jnr had a deep connection with the ocean. Growing up in Kempsey on the mid-north coast, it was his love of the ocean is something he shared with his father, where both would go down in the evenings a catch the family meal for that night. From the age of only 3, Robert would first loop the worm on the fish hook for his father.

Maintaining and continuing watercraft knowledge is very important to the Dunghutti community. Kempsey community member and Aboriginal Elder, Uncle Fred Kelly tells the story of making a traditional bark canoe in modern times and describes how this knowledge is currently being passed on to young Aboriginal men.
