The original painting is held in private collection in Sydney, Australia. It artwork is a celebration of the “Hands Across Australia” event held in 1984. The open hand is the indigenous symbol of friendship. In Campbell’s writings, he stated that the artwork symbolised the eternal link of black & white people under the spirit of the Creation Ancestors of this land. He chose the spirit represented by the kangaroo dreaming, as it was a symbol of unity for all Australians.
The kangaroo is Australia’s national animal. With over 500 various sub-species, they cover all corners of Australia. They are great survivors, able to cover massive distances and are both a placid and yet dominant animal. As a herbivore they eat only plant life. The hands are the symbol of friendship and unity. It is vision of the brave, enduring Australian spirit!
